That There is the Face of a MAN Who Already Has a Cooler of Snapper

That there is the face of a man who already has a cooler of snapper and just caught an even more delicious snapper. Mutton’s are a staple large snapper species in Key West with many fishermen hoping to catch at least 1 in their lifetime. With a keeper fish starting at 18 inches, these beautiful fish can get up to 30 inches and weigh 20+lbs!

2/3 Tarpon for the Morning

2/3 Tarpon for the morning? Not bad if I do say so myself. Evan made it clear this was the one fish he wanted to catch while in Key West so we had to make it happen. After staking out in one of my best spots, right as the sun came up the tarpon all started going crazy around the boat! And then BOOM we were on!

After Weeks of Planning Ahead

After weeks of planning ahead, Craig (my friend Jared’s dad) finally made his way to Key West for one reason, to catch his first tarpon. Coming in at just over 80lbs this fish was definitely a fighter through and through. See you next year buddy!

Who Doesn’t Like Starting Their Day With a Big Ole Cobia

Who doesn’t like starting their day with a big ole Cobia. Don’t get me wrong, after talking all morning I knew that she loved fishing, but I don’t think she was mentally prepared for me to pull a “think fast” and hand the thing to her. Her face says it all, talk about an adrenaline rush!

The Ohio Boys Didn’t Come to Play Around! The Mission Was Simple

The Ohio boys didn’t come to play around! The mission was simple. They wanted a “fish banquet” that night and that meant catching as many keepers as possible within a certain period of time. I told them I knew just the spot. We got to the secret spot then proceeded to catch our limit in 1 hour! Talk about fast work!

Today We Were in for an Unexpected Treat

Today we were in for an unexpected treat. One our way to the snapper grounds we saw a flock of sea birds diving in deeper water on some bait fish that was definitely more scared of what was under them then above. Realizing our window for action was short I handed our guest some soft plastic swim baits and it was on! The Jack attack lasted 20 long minutes of long cast and screaming reels!

These Toothy Critters Are Personally ONE of My Favorite Fish to Hunt in the Backcountry

Fast, hungry and always willing to put up a good fight, barracuda are a staple shallow water game fish here in Key West!

These Goliath Grouper Fights Never Get Old

These Goliath grouper fights never get old. Taking out my uncle Jess and his son Colton, all they wanted out of the day was to pull on something. After loading the boat with lane snapper for 30 minutes, the next bite felt off. This snapper didn’t feel like a snapper at all. That’s when all hell broke loose. Line starts peeling, everyone is frantic and I think I saw Colton start crying for a second, but you didn’t hear that from me. 10 minutes later we pull up that brute of a fish, take our photo and send her on her way!

The Flag Yellowtails Didn’t Stand a Chance Today

The flag yellowtails didn’t stand a chance today. With a 50/50 mix of thawed out chum and sand, we dropped chum balls down all day to these studs in over 100ft! That's what we call a successful day ending with fresh fish for dinner.

Ripping Lips at the Reef

If there was ever a golden rule when it comes to taking kids out fishing it would be to keep them busy. Today was the perfect example. The group was a mom, dad and their twin 10 year old boys who were literally bouncing off the walls with excitement for this trip. The stakes were high and performance was a must at this point. Thankfully the weather was perfect that day, having slicked out water all the way to the reef. With that opportunity we ran straight out to my XL yellowtail snapper spot and started chumming. After about 5 minutes of getting those fish acclimated to the presence of the boat, I taught the boys my technique to catch them and BOOM we were off to the races. An hour later with faces red, little preteen arms tired and parents laughing their tails off at the head to head competition that just ensued we had a cooler filled with big yellowtail snapper!
